Students are asked to come prepared to class on a daily basis. This means that they will need their notebook, a pencil, their books, and completed work each and every day.
Homework
Reading assignments will occur almost every night. These assignments must be completed in order for the student to be prepared for the next day's classroom work. When they neglect to read, they will not be able to participate in the discussion and writing tasks that are to be done. Therefore, when homework is not completed it is nearly impossible for them to have a successful day in Language Arts. With the reading, students are usually asked to write 3-5 sticky notes that coincide with the text. The sticky notes may have questions from the text, a word they do not understand, a quote that the student found to be remarkable, or something that they wish to discuss the next day. Each note must be written on in order for them to refer back to when we begin to look for quotations in the book to include in our writing.
There are also nights when a student may be asked to produce some type of writing. This can be in the form of a plan, an evidence collection sheet, a draft, or a final draft. Once again this homework must be completed for the student to move onto the next step of the writing process in class. If this homework is missed the student is automatically behind the next day in class, making it difficult to participate.
Books
Students are given a copy of each of the texts before we begin to read it. Due to the number of students and the number of books, if the book is lost or destroyed they will need to replace the book promptly. This ensures that all students will be able to have a copy of the book.
